A man allegedly stabbed his 21-year-old son in the arm with a pocket knife in a West End apartment on Sunday evening (June 29) before turning the knife on himself, ALXnow has learned.

The Alexandria Health Department lost dedicated federal COVID-19 grant funding earlier this year, and now the City Council will vote on a proposal for various health initiatives.

AHD is requesting one-time funding of $120,510 from the city to support the city’s Healthy Homes Action Plan for the current fiscal year, in addition to community health outreach, continued resource funding for immigrant and refugee programs, and expansion of the ALX Breathes program. The Healthy Homes program brings together dozens of city organizations to recommend home improvements.

Southern-inspired restaurant Milk & Honey is set to open its doors at 801 King Street in Old Town on Monday, July 7, bringing the popular brunch and dinner concept to the heart of Alexandria.

The new full-service restaurant will occupy the space formerly occupied by Hen Quarter, another concept of Thompson Restaurants. A reason for the restaurant swap has not been made public.


Alexandria police are investigating a double stabbing incident that occurred Sunday evening on Edsall Road. Two men were found with stab wounds, leading to a significant police presence in the area.

Alexandria’s Police Department is opening its doors to the community this fall with a free, nine-week Community Police Academy. Running from September 17 to November 12, the program offers residents and workers in Alexandria a unique opportunity to learn about law enforcement firsthand.


Alexandria’s Market Square was covered in rainbows Saturday for the City’s 8th Annual Pride Fair.

The event included dozens of vendors from businesses, nonprofits and the city. A major rail infrastructure project and a 450-unit development highlight Tuesday’s packed Alexandria City Council agenda, with several other significant funding and infrastructure items also up for consideration.

Council will consider authorizing temporary construction easements to the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority for the Alexandria Fourth Track Project, a nearly six-mile rail expansion designed to boost passenger capacity and reduce regional traffic congestion.


Governor Glenn Youngkin appointed Alexandria resident Micah Edmonds, COO of Kloke Cybersecurity, to the Virginia Israel Advisory Board in his latest round of state appointments announced Friday.

Edmonds becomes the sixth Alexandria resident to receive a state appointment in the past two weeks. Last Friday, Youngkin named five other locals to Virginia university boards, including Daniel Gade (Christopher Newport University), Hillary Waldron (William & Mary), and Preston Cooper (George Mason University).


The City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) on Saturday (June 28) announced that Old Town Pool would reopen at noon.

The pool, which had shut down on Monday (June 23) for repairs, is “back up, running, and safe for the community to enjoy,” according to the RPCA.


Hundreds of fans wrapped around the Alexandria Dunkin’ building twice this morning as players from the Savannah Bananas took over the Richmond Highway location to serve customers and hand out promotional items.

The event, which ran from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., drew such large crowds that some people waited in line for more than an hour to meet the players and receive free merchandise.
