Last year, the City of Alexandria officially killed the Taylor Run and Strawberry Run projects. In a newsletter today, Mayor Justin Wilson laid out the path ahead to bringing Alexandria into compliance with the EPA’s Chesapeake Bay pollution restrictions.

Wilson said by 2023, Alexandria had to meet 40% of the EPA’s Total Maximum Daily Load limit — the calculation of how much amount of pollutants can enter a body of water. By 2028, Wilson said Alexandria must meet 100%.

Be aware that the School Zone speed limits will now be in effect during the day at Alexandria City High School starting next month.

The City of Alexandria announced an “expanded enforcement of school zone speed limits” beginning on Monday, Nov. 4. The release said school zone speed limits will be active at the King Street and Minnie Howard campuses during the school day, in addition to morning arrival and afternoon dismissals.

Just a few days after an alert for the Taylor Run area, the Alexandria Health Department has issued a second rabies alert: this time for the Dora Kelley Nature Park vicinity.

The alert comes after a raccoon came into contact with a dog on Oct. 27 on the Dora Kelley Nature Park trail, four miles from Taylor Run. The raccoon tested positive for rabies.

The Patrick Henry and Jefferson-Houston school communities largely want their schools to remain as-is, but Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) said analysis showed they might need to convert to an elementary and middle school to help with division-wide capacity problems.

Currently, Patrick Henry and Jefferson-Houston are Pre-K through 8th-grade schools, but ACPS is considering converting one or both schools into elementary schools (Pre-K through 5th grade) or middle schools (6th through 8th grade).

Any adult Alexandrians missing that high of browsing the Scholastic book fair at schools can get a hit of it at the Old Town Book Fair next week.

The Old Town Book Fair: Adult Edition is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9, at Morrison House (116 S. Alfred Street) from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The Supreme Court has just allowed Virginia to resume its purge of voter registrations, granting an emergency appeal from Virginia’s Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

The Supreme Court granted the appeal after a federal judge in Alexandria found the state had illegally purged more than 1,600 voter registrations.

The City of Alexandria is considering a new ordinance that will prohibit (item 7) any new retail selling tobacco products within 1,00 feet of a child day center, public, private or parochial school.

The ban includes stores selling tobacco products, nicotine vapor products, alternative nicotine products or hemp products. The ban will only affect new businesses: those in operation before July 1 are grandfathered in.

Alexandria’s been seeking public feedback on proposed short-term rental regulations and has started to make changes to the proposed regulation based on feedback.

Namely, city staff said in a presentation that the proposed requirement that an operator/local agent live within 15 miles of the city has been removed.
