Updated at 1:25 p.m. An Alexandria motorcyclist was killed Sunday afternoon (June 26) after crashing and falling nearly 30 feet off the westbound Interstate 495 overpass exit ramp for Eisenhower Avenue toward Mill Road.

The motorcyclist took the exit ramp, and crashed into the cement wall while on the overpass. His identity was later released as 23-year-old Braydon A. Stone.

There have been no new deaths related to COVID-19, and cases continue to rise. In the meantime, Alexandria’s two-and-a-half-year-long state of emergency will expire on June 30.

The declaration was made by Council in March 2020 — at the onset of the pandemic — and has been extended five times.

Fireworks fans should get ready for quite a treat for the senses, as Alexandria’s annual birthday celebration is back along the waterfront on Saturday, July 9.

The free event, which will be held from 6 to 9:45 p.m., will commemorate the city’s 273rd birthday. The evening will include a performance by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and a grand finale fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.

A 28-year-old Alexandria man blamed the effects of being on Ambien on a crash that damaged an apartment building in the city’s Arlandria neighborhood.

The incident occurred on Friday, June 10, at around 4:30 p.m. in the 3800 block of Russell Road — directly across from St. Rita’s Catholic Church. A witness called police to report that a blue Ford Focus hopped the curb and smashed into the steps and rail of the entrance to the “Andrew Jackson” building of the Presidential Greens Apartments, according to a search warrant affidavit.

The shop was broken into in January — one of many eyewear sellers that have been broken into this year across the region. About $17,000 in glasses was stolen from the store, which is located in the Shoppes at Summit Centre, a shopping center in the northwest corner of Alexandria.

After months of work, two logo redesigns for Alexandria City Public Schools were sent back to the drawing board.

Last Thursday night (June 16), the School Board voted 7-2 against staff’s preferred option. Only Board Members Willie Bailey and Christopher Harris voted for the preferred logo option.

New cases of Covid have fallen by 40% since last month in Alexandria, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

As of Monday, June 20, there are 36,134 cases reported in Alexandria. The seven-day average of new cases is 70.9 — down from 85.3 at this point last week, and down from 119.4 a month ago.
