Thirty-eight Alexandria students were referred to court for alleged criminal activity in the second semester of the last school year, and there was also a significant uptick in the number of incidents requiring a police response.

After 10 years in Del Ray, the Bellies & Babies consignment boutique could soon close for good. That is unless owner Lee Raynes can find a buyer in the next two months.

Raynes didn’t renew the lease for the shop at 1913 Mount Vernon Avenue, and said that a potential buyer recently backed out after a six-month negotiation. The move means that unless Raynes can find someone to buy her brand and take all of the store merchandise off her hands, the store’s last day is Dec. 15.

Alexandria City Manager Jim Parajon has hired Tarrick McGuire as Alexandria’s new police chief.

McGuire, the assistant chief of police in Arlington, Texas, has been with that department since 2003 — just three years before Parajon started working in that city government in 2006. There was no mention of their relationship or knowing each other in the release to the public.

An Alexandria charity has been awarded $1.9 million in federal funds to train behavioral health professionals to work with people suffering from racial disparities, drug addicts, and students with mental health disorders.

The funding was announced today in a joint statement by Virginia’s U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. It’s part of a $2.2 million package to fund education programs in Alexandria, Richmond and Harrisonburg.

A new head spa just opened on King Street in Old Town.

Meraki Head Spa soft launched last week at 320 King Street. Owner Kathleen Le has held onto the space since moving her beauty parlor Salon Meraki to 1101 Queen Street in 2021, and started renovating the 900 square-foot space in August. She added eight beds, seven staffers, ambient music and turned off the lights.
