A 27-year-old woman was injured when struck by a driver operating a four-door sedan as she crossed Mount Vernon Avenue in Arlandria on Thursday night (March 6).

The woman suffered a non-life threatening injury in the incident, which occurred at around 7 p.m. outside the Exxon Station at 4001 Mount Vernon Avenue.

After a four-day trial, a jury this week ignored an insanity defense and found an Alexandria man guilty of murdering an acquaintance in the BJ’s Wholesale Club in 2021.

On Wednesday, March 5, Rakibul Fakir, was convicted of first-degree murder for the stabbing death of 29-year-old Abiy Zemene inside the store at 101 S. Van Dorn Street on Sept. 25, 2021.

A 32-year-old Alexandria man has been found guilty for pimping out his girlfriend from his apartment.

Orayl Ingram was convicted on Feb. 28 for pandering and sex trafficking. He is currently being held without bond in the city jail, and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each offense. His sentencing is scheduled for June 5.

More details have been released on the alleged attempted abduction and sexual assault near Holmes Run Dog Park last fall, as well as the arrest of a suspect.

The incident occurred at around 6 p.m. on Oct. 29. A suspect, 21-year-old Rohid Hakimi, was arrested on Nov. 14 — two weeks after the incident occurred. He is currently being held without bond in the Alexandria jail.

More details have been released on Alexandria resident Timothy McGhee, a substitute teacher in Arlington charged in January with stalking and taking indecent liberties with an underage Washington-Liberty High School student.

McGhee, a 47-year-old substitute math teacher at Washington-Liberty High School in Arlington, unsuccessfully ran for state Senate in Arlington and Alexandria in 2011. He was arrested on Jan. 10 and charged with stalking and taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a supervisory or custodial relationship.

While still under construction, owner Bill Blackburn said that each section of the seasonal popup at 2312 Mount Vernon Avenue represents one of Swift’s albums — Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation and Folklore. There’s even a hall with portraits of her ex-boyfriends.

A 41-year-old Alexandria man was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for executing the family dog in a fit of rage, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter.

Sean Nikai Callender was sentenced on Jan. 23 after being convicted of felony animal cruelty and reckless handling of a firearm. The incident occurred on Feb. 25, 2024, in an apartment in the 4300 block of Raleigh Avenue, which is near the Shoppes of Foxchase on Duke Street.

The owner of an iconic commercial building in the heart of Old Town wants to convert the second floor from commercial to residential space.

The special use permit (SUP) request is going before the Alexandria Planning Commission on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Building owner Jemals 628 Newco LLC wants to convert the 6,700-square-foot second floor of the building at 628 and 622 King Street into five studio and six one-bedroom apartments.
