What is your hope for the future of Duke Street?
That’s one of the many questions the city is asking as it ramps up 18-24 months of planning for the Duke Street Land Use Plan, a document to guide city officials in the development of the Duke Street Corridor from the former Landmark Mall to Alexandria Union Station.
The document is expected to be ready for City Council consideration and adoption in late 2026/early 2027, according to the city.
The community poll is available in English, Amharic, and Spanish.
By the time the document is adopted by the Council, a number of major projects along Duke Street will be nearing completion. The first buildings in the sprawling WestEnd development are expected to open in 2026, followed by the opening of Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark in 2028.
According to the city:
The FY 2024-2025 Interdepartmental Long Range Planning Work Program adopted by City Council includes a community planning process to update the comprehensive land use plan for the Duke Street Corridor. Recognizing that the land use concept for this area was last comprehensively updated in 1992, the planning process will engage the community to create a land use vision for the future.
The planning process will explore topics such as land use, environment and climate, equity, mobility and connectivity, pedestrian safety and accessibility, parks and open space, and housing affordability. Translation and interpretation services will be provided throughout the process to ensure that all who wish to participate may do so.
