A 21-year-old Alexandria man is under arrest for allegedly stabbing a man early Tuesday morning (Sept. 15) outside a convenience store in the city’s Arlandria neighborhood.
Jelzon Garcia Gonzales was arrested in the 7000 block of Columbia Pike in Annandale after the Alexandria Police Department received “multiple tips from the community” and a photo of the suspect from a nearby business, APD announced today (Sept. 16). He was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and is being held without bond.
The male victim was left in critical condition. The victim was sleeping on the ground near the Tiger Market parking lot (3903 Mount Vernon Avenue) when the suspect stabbed him multiple times, according to police. APD was notified of the incident just after 4 a.m. Tuesday.
“The community’s willingness to come forward with information is a sign of trust in the Alexandria Police Department, and that trust directly supports our ability to keep Alexandria safe,” Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said in a statement. “I commend the detectives of APD’s Criminal Investigations Division for their swift, diligent work to identify and apprehend the suspect. This case demonstrates what is possible when our community and our detectives work together.”
Garcia Gonzales was also indicted on Monday, Sept. 14, on a charge of failing to stop at the scene of an accident in June. Last month, he was found guilty of driving without a license in relation to that incident and was given a suspended sentence of 15 days in jail and a year’s probation. He’s scheduled to choose a court date on Sept. 24, according to Alexandria Circuit Court records.
