As residents received their latest car tax bills in the mail starting last week, they were surprised to find their residential parking permit stickers have not arrived.
Vehicle owners used to receive permit stickers at the same time as personal property tax bills. But that did not occur this year when the tax bills arrived.
Residents reached out to Mayor Alyia Gaskins to address the confusion. In a video update, Gaskins said the city has had to send two separate mailings since 2024 as it introduced a new vendor. However, the permit has always been mailed first or timed at the same time as the tax bill mailing.
That did not happen with the latest mailings after the vendor went out of business.
“That then meant we had to rush and find a new vendor,” Gaskins said. “The vendor that we are working with to provide the parking permit, they ran into production delays.”
Gaskins said information on the bill stating that vehicle owners can only get permits at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center is not accurate. The city’s 8,700 residential parking permits will be mailed by Sept. 4, and existing permits are valid until Nov. 15.
“We understand the mistake. We understand the confusion, and we’re taking action to fix it,” Gaskins said.
Permits are only needed in areas of Alexandria designated as residential permit parking districts, such as Old Town and select other neighborhoods. The city’s ordinance restricting vehicles from being located in the same on-street space for over 72 continuous hours still applies to residential parking permit holders.
Personal property tax bills, which continue to assess vehicles at $5.33 per $100 of assessed value, will be due on Monday, Oct. 5.
