Pet adopters stepped up to help the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria over the weekend as the animal shelter was near capacity.
On Friday (Aug. 28), AWLA reported that the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter (4101 Eisenhower Avenue) was “very full and nearing capacity” and it had more anticipated animal surrenders on the way.
“This is part of a trend shelters across the country typically see this time of year,” the AWLA shared on Facebook. “Summer is peak moving and relocation season. Landlord restrictions, housing changes, financial challenges, and other circumstances can force families to make the incredibly difficult decision to surrender a beloved pet.”
To incentivize adopters, AWLA waived adoption fees for dogs and cats 6 months and older and all small mammals during an adoption event Saturday and Sunday.
AWLA spokesperson Erin Shackelford told ALXnow 25 animals have been adopted since Friday, with additional adoptions pending. That has relieved some of the pressure on the shelter’s capacity.
“Of course, there are still many great animals who need families!” Shackelford said. “Our shelter tends to stay fuller over the summer.”
