An IndyCar in the Freedom 250 Grand Prix will be making its way from the King Street Metro station in Alexandria this morning (Aug. 20).
Metro said the IndyCar will make its way through the Yellow Line between the King Street Metro and D.C.’s Mount Vernon Square. The trip will happen between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., and there will be brief stops at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and L’Enfant Plaza stations. A return trip from Mount Vernon Square is expected to end by 12 p.m.
The Grand Prix will happen Aug. 22 to 23 on the National Mall, including the main race at 1:10 p.m. Sunday. The race was established by President Donald Trump’s executive order to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. This is the first time an NTT IndyCar Series is being hosted on the National Mall.

The race cars will get close to 200 mph at points during the Grand Prix. But according to WTOP, regular drivers traveling through the city are experiencing slower traffic due to road closures and traffic restrictions that will continue even after race weekend.
Metro encourages spectators to use the rail system to get to the Grand Prix. Metro Rail will have normal weekend service with additional trains on standby for the end of the race. Spectators can only access the viewing area listed on their ticket. Metro stations providing access to the Grand Prix will be L’Enfant Plaza, Smithsonian, Federal Center SW, Archives, Federal Triangle, Metro Center, Gallery Place and Judiciary Square.
