Reminder on Walking Tour for Taylor Run Stabilization Project — “This City of Alexandria is hosting a community walkthrough tour for the Taylor Run Infrastructure Stabilization project. The walking tour is part of the City’s continued community engagement as the project advances through design. Participants will have an opportunity to see the project area firsthand and discuss elements of the project’s approach to stabilizing infrastructure within Taylor Run and the 60% design set.” [City of Alexandria]

Alexandria Man Charged in Hybla Valley Stabbing — “Officers found a 41-year-old man who had been stabbed in his upper body. Responders transported him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was still hospitalized as of Monday afternoon.” [DC News Now]

Intermittent Road Closure in Alexandria West — “The City of Alexandria is advising the public that North Beauregard Street between Sanger Avenue and Morgan Street will be intermittently closed starting Tuesday, August 18, through Thursday, August 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The closures are needed to facilitate the delivery of equipment and materials for ongoing repairs to Holmes Run Trail. Full road closures are expected to last approximately 10 to 15 minutes.” [City of Alexandria]

APD Opens Registration for Fall Community Police Academy — “The free nine-week program combines classroom instruction with hands-on experiences that provide participants with a deeper understanding of modern policing. Attendees will use lidar to measure vehicle speeds, meet APD’s K-9 teams, tour the Special Operations Team’s armored vehicle, observe a mock critical incident demonstrating the Crisis Negotiations Team’s communication and de-escalation techniques, and learn about the department’s mental health co-response program. Participants will also meet Chief of Police Tarrick McGuire and have opportunities throughout the academy to speak directly with officers from across the department about their roles and experiences.” [Alexandria Police Department]

Alexandria Children’s Chorus Seeks New Participants — “Registration for the Alexandria Children’s Chorus is open, with rehearsals beginning Sept. 1 and the chorus’ first concert set for Oct. 3. The community chorus is open to children from kindergarten through sixth grade, with no auditions or choral experience required.” [Patch]

Governor Formally Joins Proposed Dominion Energy Merger Case — “Governor Abigail Spanberger [on Monday] filed with the State Corporation Commission (SCC) to formally intervene in the proposed $67 billion merger between Florida-based NextEra Energy and Dominion Energy … In her formal Notice of Participation as a Respondent filing, Governor Spanberger reiterated the three non-negotiable priorities that will guide her involvement as the SCC conducts its review: delivering more affordable energy bills for Virginians, protecting Virginia’s utility workforce, and accelerating Virginia’s progress toward producing affordable, reliable, local, and clean power into the future. This is the first time any Governor of Virginia has intervened at the SCC.” [Gov. Abigail Spanberger news release]

Virginia Approved as Early Primary State for Democratic Presidential Nomination — “The vote came during the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting in Austin, where members signed off on a schedule that begins with South Carolina on Jan. 22, followed by Nevada on Feb. 1. New Hampshire, New Mexico, Michigan and Virginia round out the early-state lineup throughout February, all voting before Super Tuesday.” [CBS News]

D.C. Region Ruled Out of Hosting James Beard Awards — “The James Beard Foundation notified the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Friday morning that its pitch to host the culinary celebration from 2029 to 2033 didn’t make the first round of cuts. The foundation broke the news to RAMW ahead of the planned release of a more detailed request for proposals to a short list of cities.” [Washington Business Journal]
