Alexandria’s Rep. Don Beyer handily won his party’s nomination Tuesday night to run for his seventh term representing Virginia’s 8th Congressional District, and retired Army Maj. Gen. Bert Mizusawa won the Republican nomination to run against U.S. Sen. Mark Warner in the Nov. 3 general election.
Here’s a breakdown of how the races turned out in Alexandria.
Beyer won the primary against his four opponents with 39,714 total votes cast, nearly 70% of votes in the district. He also got 9,065 votes in Alexandria’s 32 precincts, about 65%, according to unofficial election results.
“With so much at stake for our community and our country at this moment, I am grateful to Northern Virginians for again making me their Democratic nominee to fight for Virginia’s 8th District,” Beyer said in a statement. “Today Northern Virginians are beset by skyrocketing prices, attacks on many of our neighbors, and major threats to our democratic system.”
The congressman added, “Rather than help Americans concerned about inflation, President Trump’s Republican allies are enabling his tariffs, supporting his disastrous war, slashing health care for working people, and turning a blind eye to some of the worst corruption ever seen in this country.”
Beyer defeated former Alexandria City Council Member Mo Seifeldein, fired State Department worker Michael Duffin, veteran and former CIA officer Adam Dunigan and military family advocate Lorena Bruner.
There were also 6,346 early votes, about 46% of the total 13,888 votes cast in the city.
Beyer will now face Republican Tony Sabio on Nov. 3.
The top three-performing precincts in the city were:
- Mount Vernon Recreation Center (2701 Commonwealth Avenue) with 583 in-person votes
- Cameron Station Community Center (200 Cameron Station Boulevard) with 435 in-person votes
- George Washington Middle School (1005 Mount Vernon Avenue) with 396 in-person votes
The lowest performing precinct in the city was at Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School (1701 N. Beauregard Street) with 71 total votes cast.
Mizusawa wins Republican nomination
In the Republican U.S. Senate race, retired Army Maj. Gen. Bert Mizusawa won the Republican nomination and will face Warner (D-Va.), who is running for a fourth term.
“The fight is just starting,” Mizusawa posted on Facebook. “Thank you everyone who supported me during this first phase. On to the next. Let’s make this next election even better!”
Mizusawa won the primary with 122,442 votes (51%).
There were only 1,530 total votes cast in Alexandria, and Mizusawa got 731 of them (48%). There were also 590 early votes cast in the city.
The top performing precincts in the city were:
- North Quaker (1801 N. Quaker Street) with 66 in-person votes
- Cameron Station Community Center (200 Cameron Station Boulevard) with 57 in-person votes
- Trinity Church (2911 Cameron Mills Road) with 53 in-person votes
The lowest performing precinct in the city is the Del Pepper Center (4850 Mark Center Drive), with six voters casting early ballots, and, as of noon, 10 voters casting in-person ballots.
