Repaving Work in Alexandria This Week — City repaving will happen on King Street (night work from 30th Street to North Hampton Street) and the Mount Vernon Avenue/Arlington Ridge Road Bridge (night concrete pour work). [Alexandria T&ES]

Reminder on King Street Project Near Alexandria City High School — “Project work will begin on King Street between West Braddock Road and Chinquapin Drive starting Monday, July 6 as part of the King Street Access and Safety Improvements Project at Alexandria City High School. Students, staff, and community members are encouraged to exercise caution in the work zone and obey all posted signs.” [Alexandria T&ES]

White Nationalist Group Marches on July 4 — “Residents in Capitol Hill woke up Saturday morning to the sound of hundreds of members of the white supremacist group Patriot Front marching through their neighborhood, prompting fear and concern on a holiday weekend already altered by extreme heat after Washington’s Independence Day parade was canceled.” [WUSA9]

Data Centers to Use Backup Generators During Heat Wave — “The nation’s largest electricity grid — which includes Maryland, Washington D.C, and a dozen other states — received a green light from the Trump administration on Tuesday to require data centers and other large customers to turn on back-up generators during this week’s heatwave. The order, signed by U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, allows PJM Interconnection to tap into diesel back-up generators, battery arrays and more as a ‘last resort’ to prevent power shut-offs as temperatures climb to dangerous heights in the latter half of the week.” [Virginia Mercury]

America’s 250th Celebration Marked by Heat, Storms — “The nation’s 250th birthday celebration in Washington was beset by record heat, lightning strikes, an evacuation order and widespread confusion on the National Mall about whether the event would go forward. It had been a long, often stressful day. But the fireworks display that began a stroke before midnight and lasted 40 minutes was a reward for those who stayed and may have provided a temporary respite for a capital and country riven by political anger, distrust and contempt.” [The Washington Post]

Cleanup in Alexandria Follows July 4 — “On Monday, July 6, 2026 [from 9-11 a.m.], as thousands of visitors travel through the Washington, DC area for the Fourth of July festivities, New Heaven & New Earth Church is taking action to clean up the community with a heart of service. In partnership with the National Park Service, New Heaven & New Earth Church is mobilizing local youths and families to clean up Jones Point Park in Alexandria. Volunteers will be restoring the national park by removing trash, litter, and debris along trails as well as surrounding green space.” [New Heaven & New Earth Church release]
