Bread & Water Co. Unveils New Fried Chicken Sandwich

Bread & Water Co. at the Belle View Shopping Center has decided to expand its menu with a fried chicken sandwich.

For $10 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, customers can get a fried chicken sandwich on a homemade brioche bun, with pickles and special sauce. New $4.50 side orders include waffle fries, brownies and banana pudding.

The pandemic forced owners Markos Panas and Noelie Rickey to shift operations at their location at 1513 Belle View Blvd., namely by cutting out their work with area farmers’ markets. Without taking out government loans, they kept most of their 26-person staff employed throughout the year and only shut down production for one day.

“Chicken sandwiches are obviously  a hot phenomenon, and they’re going on all over the place, we happen to have a chef, Patrick Tanyag, who’s really amazing has a lot of experience with this,” Panas told ALXnow. “I think you’ll be seeing a lot of new things from us, especially this year. We’ve had a lot of time to ruminate and to be creative. And it’s a lot of fun, and we’re not really worried about failing. It’s more about what can we do to meet our potential.”

Bread & Water lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in inventory sales after a fire affected the Belle View Shopping Center in 2019. The company rebounded with a new interior design and expanded their kitchen offerings. The interior was once again redesigned last year for distancing amid the pandemic.

“We’ve tried to really connect with people in the neighborhood,” Rickey said. “We definitely feel like they’ve been supporting us. It’s been awesome.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
