Next Woodrow Wilson Bridge drawbridge opening set for tonight

The Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge will have a drawbridge opening with impacts on Capital Beltway traffic for the second time this week, the Virginia Department of Transportation says.

The drawbridge will open multiple times between 10 p.m. Thursday and 5 a.m. Friday for maintenance work. Drivers should expect intermittent traffic stops during that timeframe. VDOT recommends using alternate routes due to anticipated delays.

The drawbridge also opened around 1 p.m. Sunday (June 7) to allow Swedish Navy warship replica Kalmar Nyckel to make its way to Alexandria. The tall ship is one of four that will be open for free tours during Sails on the Potomac from Friday, June 12 through Sunday, June 14 in Old Town.

The Woodrow Wilson Bridge is a drawbridge spanning the Potomac River that connects Virginia and Prince George’s County, Md., via the Capital Beltway. Maintenance and the passage of larger vessels periodically disrupt traffic flow on the busy interstate.

While the original bridge required drawbridge openings roughly 260 times per year, the reconstructed span — introduced with a higher clearance in 2006 — reduced that number to about 60.
