
On This Day in Alexandria History — “On May 13, 1904, in the center of the intersection of Prince and South Washington Streets, a decorative iron fence, cast iron urns and landscaping was installed around the statue Appomattox, the location where upwards of 800 Alexandria troops gathered in the early morning hours of May 24, 1861 as Union troops began their Civil War occupation of Alexandria. In May 1889, the statue sculpted by Caspar Buberl, based on a soldier in John Elder’s battlefield painting of the same name, was installed at the site.” [Historic Alexandria]
Del Ray House & Garden Tour Raises Over $27K for Local Causes — Hundreds attended the tour featuring a dozen homes in the Del Ray neighborhood on Saturday, May 9. Proceeds from the tour will go to the Little Red Caboose restoration between the Mount Vernon Rec Center, Mount Vernon Community School, and Duncan Library, as well as Mount Vernon Community School after-school tutoring, and the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria. Sens. Warner and Kaine Announce Funding for DCA — Federal funds secured through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program include over $18 million for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority to conduct projects at Ronald Reagan Washington Airport to reconstruct existing paved runways reaching the end of their useful lives. Next Meeting on Waterfront Flood Mitigation Project — “The City of Alexandria will host a virtual community update meeting on the Waterfront Flood Mitigation Project next Monday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom webinar. New Metro Station Not Planned for Future Commanders Stadium — “Metro is not recommending the construction of a new Metrorail station at the Commanders’ future home at the RFK Stadium site, documents released Tuesday reveal. The transit agency instead recommended the creation of a rapid bus line called the Gold Line that would connect to Metrorail and buses at Union Station.” [NBC Washington]
Rep. Beyer Blasts President Trump Over Rising Prices — “Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) is blaming President Donald Trump for surging consumer prices, after federal data released Tuesday showed inflation climbing at its fastest pace in three years.
