Business Fundraiser for Animal Shelter — “Madison Street Tattoos’ ‘Tattoos for Rescues’ fundraiser on Saturday, April 25 was an immense success, bringing together animal lovers, artists, and the community for an unforgettable day in support of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA). The event raised an astounding $12,100 to benefit animals and pet families in need. In addition, the shop also collected physical donations of pet food and supplies to benefit our in-shelter animals. Over the course of 10+ hours, five dedicated tattoo artists worked tirelessly, inking more than 50 participants. [Animal Welfare League of Alexandria]

Sen. Warner on Bill to Return Alexandria, Arlington to D.C. — “Particularly as an Alexandria resident, this bill to ‘make DC square again’ is a sad, distracting attempt to disenfranchise Virginians. Republicans should join us in actually working to improve costs, health care, and housing… not doing partisan stunts.” [Sen. Mark Warner/Facebook]

Parking Concern at Minnie Howard Campus — “During the school day, the lower lot is entirely reserved for teachers, and the upper lot is mostly reserved for buses. This means that students have no school-sponsored spaces to park, leaving them with three options: they can ignore these rules and park in the Minnie Howard lots, illegally park in the lot behind the Bradlee Vacuum Store or drive to North Earley Street and park in a residential neighborhood.” [Theogony]

Historic Markers Dedicated at Former Plantation Site — “In the mid-1700s, most of modern-day Fairlington and Shirlington was part of a plantation called Torthorwald, a rural retreat for the wealthy Carlyle merchant family of Alexandria. When patriarch John Carlyle died in 1780, Torthorwald was home to an enslaved population totaling more than 40. And on Sunday, two of them were honored with the placement of new “stumbling stones” near the Fairlington Villages Community Center.” [ARLnow]

New E-Bikes for Police — “The Alexandria Police Department (ADP) has added two new electric bikes to its fleet to support more accessible and community-focused policing. The e-bikes will help officers patrol parks, trails, and neighborhood areas more efficiently while strengthening visibility and engagement with residents. This initiative also demonstrates a more sustainable and flexible mobility option for community outreach and public safety.” [Eco-City Newsletter – April 2026]

S. Patrick Street Work Coming Up — “The City of Alexandria invites community members to a pre-construction meeting on upcoming roadway and sidewalk construction along South Patrick Street between Jefferson Street and Wolfe Street. The meeting will be held on Monday, May 11 at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center (1108 Jefferson Street) from 7 to 8 p.m. City staff will provide an overview of the upcoming construction along South Patrick Street, between Jefferson Street and Wolfe Street.” [City of Alexandria]

Colleagues recognized deputies and professional staff for their outstanding performance, team spirit, leadership, and other areas.” [Alexandria Sheriff’s Office Monthly Bulletin]
