Unemployment keeps trending in the right direction in Alexandria.
The Virginia Employment Commission reports that there were 1,375 continued claims for the week ending Nov. 28. That’s a 9% dip from the previous week total of 1,513 continued claims, and is 16% down from the 1,628 continued claims for the week ending Nov. 14. It is also 41% down from the 2,340 continued claims that were made for the week ending October 24.
Initial (first time) unemployment dipped slightly to 110 new claims for the week ending Nov. 28, down from 112 claims for the week ending Nov. 21. There were also 173 initial claims for the week ending Nov. 14;Â 102 initial claims for the week ending Nov. 7; 164 initial claims for the week ending Oct. 31; and 123 claims for the week ending Oct. 24.
The week ending Nov. 28 was the 37th week since the pandemic began in Virginia, and unemployment has gone down significantly since the spring and summer. At one point there were nearly 7,000 initial unemployment claims in Alexandria.
Statewide, there were 8,606 initial claims for the week ending Nov. 28. That’s the lowest number of new claims since the pandemic began in March.
Continued claims throughout Virginia fell to 72,305 for the week ending Nov. 28, a 10.9% decrease from the previous week’s 81,138 claims.
“This drop indicated a continuation of its recent declining trend and was over 80% lower than its May 16 filing week peak.” VEC noted in a release.

According to VEC:
The locality with the most initial unemployment claims this week was Prince William County which saw 572 initial filings. Virginia Beach City and Fairfax County followed with 508 and 491 initial claims respectively. Of the 133 counties and independent cities in the Commonwealth, 106 localities saw a decrease, or no change, in the number of filings this week compared to the week before. The locality with the largest decrease in claims was Fairfax County which had 310 fewer claims compared to the previous week.

Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above.
