Three candidates have submitted the paperwork necessary to run for Alexandria City Council, meeting the city’s 5 p.m. deadline today (Friday).
Democrat Sandy Marks, independent candidate and former Republican City Councilman Frank Fannon, and independent Alison O’Connell have each turned in the necessary paperwork to be on the April 21 ballot, Director of Elections & General Registrar Angie Maniglia Turner confirmed to ALXnow shortly after 5 p.m. Friday.
“Our office will now draft the ballot and send it to the state for approval,” Turner said in an email.
The candidates are running to replace former Councilman-turned-Delegate R. Kirk McPike (D-5), who was recently sworn in to fill the House seat of new State Sen. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-39).
Alexandria Republicans won’t have a candidate in this race, after GOP nominee Gerry Chandler withdrew himself yesterday, reportedly due to the “onerous financial disclosures required” to apply, he told ALXnow. However, in comments made to The Alexandria Brief earlier this week, the nominee said he would be out-of-state until tomorrow and was previously unaware of the filing deadline.
