Several Alexandria artists named finalists in regional Wammie Music Awards

Eight Alexandria artists have advanced as finalists in the 37th annual Wammie Music Awards, as competition narrows down in the regional program.

Several musicians made the cut from Alexandria’s initial 14 nominees, receiving 12 finalist nominations for their work across multiple genres, including hip-hop, pop, funk and more. Winners will be announced during this year’s live awards show on Saturday, March 28, at D.C.’s Capital Turnaround.

During the public voting period, more than 900 music nominations collected over 32,000 votes from regional music fans, breaking previous years’ engagement records after the award’s two-year hiatus, according to a release.

Alexandria artists garnered nearly 1,000 votes, according to musician George Katsos.

Carrying the theme of “Life, Legacy & Lyrics,” this year’s Wammies are produced by MusicianShip, a nonprofit that provides free music education programs to D.C.-area youth.

“From the pre-event music education sessions to the red carpet receptions, award show and after-party, this evolving music platform reflects our unwavering commitment to uplift the local ecosystem and celebrate all of its deserving participants during these unprecedented times,” MusicianShip Executive Director and CEO Eric Liley said in the release.

WUSA9’s Allison Seymour and Lorenzo Hall will anchor the show with WHUR-FM host Nina Brown, joined by official Wammies correspondent The Media Prince.

The Wammie red carpet will be livestreamed on WUSA9’s app and website starting at 5 p.m. March 28. Tickets are $50 for general admission or $125 for VIP, which includes “priority entry, reserved seating, access to VIP‑only areas, complimentary hors d’oeuvres & beverage.”
