Morning Notes for February 23, 2026

ACPS: Synchronous Learning Today — “Class times will include live instruction via Zoom, along with independent work,” according to ACPS. “Teachers will also provide virtual office hours. Please check your student’s Canvas or Clever account no later than 8 a.m. for details about your child’s schedule.” [ALXnow]

Refuse Collection on Normal Schedule — “The City of Alexandria will be open tomorrow. Refuse, recycling, yard waste, and curbside food waste collection will continue on a normal schedule.” [City of Alexandria]

ICYMI: Marks Wins Council Firehouse Primary — “Former Alexandria Democratic Committee Chair Sandy Marks has won the Democratic firehouse primary for an open seat on City Council, beating four opponents to face independent candidate and former Republican councilman Frank Fannon in the special election.” [ALXnow]

Student Creates Virtual Tour of Douglass Memorial Cemetery — “When Alexandria City High School Senior Alex ‘Zhi’ McMillan saw the run-down conditions of the burial ground, he was inspired to develop online technology to capture its history. The experience gave McMillan the perfect opportunity to discuss his experience in his college essay, and his story was highlighted in a New York Times article about high school seniors’ college applications.” [Theogony]

Beyer Blasts New Trump Tariffs — “Trump’s tariffs were so blatantly illegal that even his handpicked justices struck them down. Fresh off announcing new tariffs to jack up prices for the American people, he’s already raising these illegal taxes again. These tariffs will require a vote in Congress later this year, if not sooner. I will be working to ensure they are rejected, and to build a coalition to restore Congress’ ironclad authority to regulate trade.” [Rep. Don Beyer]

Waterfront Sewage Spill Data — “The relatively low bacteria counts at Jones Point and the City Marina suggest that, at least at the time of sampling, contamination levels in Alexandria’s open river channel were not elevated to the same degree seen closer to the rupture. However, Four Mile Run’s higher reading is notable because tributaries and slower-moving waters can trap and concentrate pollutants. Officials continue to advise avoiding contact with river water until advisories are lifted.” [The Zebra]

DOJ Fires Halligan Replacement — “A lawyer picked by judges to serve as the top federal prosecutor for a Virginia office that pursued cases against foes of President Donald Trump was swiftly fired Friday by the Justice Department in the latest clash over the appointments of powerful U.S. attorneys.” [AP]

Statement: Warner, Kaine Condemn DOJ Firing — “‘Now, Trump’s DOJ is also disregarding the law, which clearly gives district judges the power to select U.S. Attorneys when these positions are vacant. The EDVA judges made an excellent decision in picking James Hundley. Virginians deserve a court system that is fully staffed with qualified personnel—and the Trump Administration’s antics are making our communities less safe.” [Sen. Mark Warner]
