Initial and continued unemployment claims fell last week in Alexandria, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.
There were 102 initial (first-time) claims for the week ending Nov. 7, which is a decrease from 164 initial claims from the week ending on Oct. 31.
For the week ending Nov. 7, the city had 1,933 claims, which was down from 1,942 continued claims for the week ending Oct. 31. There were also 2,340 continued claims for the week ending Oct. 24.
Incidentally, the Alexandria Workforce Development Center hosts weekly workshops to help residents get jobs.
The week ending Nov. 7 was the 34th week since the pandemic began in Virginia, and unemployment has gone down significantly since the spring and summer. In April, for instance, there were nearly 7,000 initial unemployment claims in Alexandria.
Throughout Virginia there were 9,909 initial claims, a 4.3% decrease, for the week ending Nov. 7. There were also 91,960 continued claims, which is a 7.8% decrease from the previous week. It is also 73,760 claims higher than the 18,200 continued claims from the comparable week last year.
“After the last spike in initial claims during the week ending July 25th, weekly initial claims have remained steadily between 9,000 and 12,000 claims per week,” notes a weekly VEC report. “More than half of the continued claims statewide were in the accommodation/food service, health care, administrative support and retail industries.”
According to VEC:
The locality with the most initial unemployment claims this week was Fairfax County which saw 663 initial filings. Prince William County and Richmond City followed with 613 and 553 initial claims respectively. Of the 133 counties and independent cities in the Commonwealth, 70 localities saw either a decrease or no change in the number of filings compared to the week before. The locality with the largest decrease in claims was Norfolk City which had 140 fewer initial claims compared to the previous week.

Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018!
