The Alexandria Health Department is advising senior citizens to get a high-dose influenza vaccine this flu season.
“Flu vaccination is particularly important for senior residents, who account for most hospitalizations and deaths from flu, and are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, which shares many characteristics of flu,” according to a city release. “AHD Medical Reserve Corps recently conducted an informal phone survey of more than 50 Alexandria pharmacies, and found that most of them either have the Senior Flu Shot available currently or will soon.”
The city conducted drive-through and walk-up flu shot clinics on Sept. 26 and Oct. 3. More than 1,800 shots were administered.
Seniors make up 96% of all COVID-19 fatalities in Alexandria, and flu and COVID-19 symptoms are similar. That means that COVID-19 testing might be needed to help confirm a diagnosis.
If you are unable to make it to a flu clinic, you can still receive a flu shot at:
- Doctor’s offices or clinics
- Drug stores
- Grocery stores with a pharmacy
- The Alexandria Health Department
Regardless of where you receive your flu shot, there are some things you can do to make sure your trip is successful:
- Call ahead to check that vaccines are still available, and whether an appointment or fees are required
- If you’re 65 or over, ask whether the provider has the high dose vaccine for seniors
- Wear a mask on your visit
- Don’t get the vaccine if you’re sick

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above.
