Ross Dress For Less will close in Old Town next month ahead of private school conversion

Ross Dress For Less is closing next month in Old Town.

The department store at 112 N. Washington Street will close forever on Friday, Jan. 16, according to a sign posted on the retailer’s door. After closing, the building will be renovated and turned into a new “upper school” for the private Linder Academy, which first opened in Old Town in 2021.

The new school will offer classes for kids in grades 7-12.

The three-story building will undergo a $7 million renovation during the current school year. In the meantime, school for grades 7-12 is being held next door at Christ Church (118 N. Washington Street), according to the academy’s website.

The 36,383-square-foot building was built in 1953, and was the longtime home to a J.C. Penney store. Christ Church bought the building in 1998 for $1.85 million, and the property was last assessed at $6.8 million in value in January, according to city property records.

The nearest Ross Dress For Less locations are in Lincolnia (6198 Little River Turnpike), Kingstowne (5830 Kingstowne Towne Center) and Bailey’s Crossroads (5840 Crossroads Center Way).
