COVID-19 Update: Deaths at 69, Cases at 3,825 in Alexandria

There has been another COVID-19 death reported in Alexandria, and the death toll from the virus in the city now stands at 69.

The victim was a man in his 80s.

There are or have been 3,825 cases in Alexandria, according to the Virginia Department of Health. That is an increase of 109 cases since this time last week.

There have also been 321 hospitalizations since the first case was reported on March 11, which is an increase of three hospitalizations. The Alexandria Health Department says that one in 12 infected residents has been hospitalized.

Across Virginia, there have been 3,172 deaths and there are or have been 146,593 cases of the virus.

Demographic, Age and Sex Breakdown

Latino residents are the hardest hit with 1,781 reported cases, followed by Black residents with 791 cases, white residents with 743 cases, Asian or Pacific Islander residents with 137 cases, 85 cases classified as “other” and four native American cases.

There are or have been 1,986 women (with 35 deaths) and 1,825 men (with 34 deaths) in Alexandria with the virus. The only age groups that have not experienced a death so far are children and teenagers.

  • 80+    — 30 deaths, 120 cases
  • 70-79 — 19 deaths, 137 cases
  • 60-69 — Four deaths, 288 cases
  • 50-59 — 13 deaths, 484 cases
  • 40-49 — One death, 667 cases
  • 30-39 — One death, 887 cases
  • 20-29 — One death, 715 cases
  • 10-19  — Zero deaths, 269 cases
  • 0-9     — Zero deaths, 247 cases

Testing Update

There have also been 39,742 (polymerase chain reaction) tests administered in the city so far and 4,705 antibody tests. The city’s seven-day positivity rate is now at 5.1% and has been under 10% for almost four months.

  • Arlington County has 3,963 cases, 149 deaths and a 3% seven-day positivity rate
  • Fairfax County has 21,030 cases, 601 deaths and a 4.4% seven-day positivity rate
  • Loudoun County has 6,830 cases, 124 deaths and a 5.3% seven-day positivity rate

Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
