Thanksgiving road closures planned to accommodate Del Ray Turkey Trot

Several roads in Del Ray will close tomorrow (Thursday) to accommodate the neighborhood’s 50th annual Turkey Trot.

Closures will be in effect from approximately 6-11:30 a.m., starting at Mount Vernon Avenue between Braddock Road and Glendale Avenue, according to an announcement from the Alexandria Police Department.

The following additional roads will close at 9 a.m.

  • Russell Road (closed to cross-traffic; traffic control personnel on site)
  • Uhler Avenue
  • Oxford Avenue
  • Commonwealth Avenue
  • Chapman Street
  • Linden Street
  • Maple Street

Self-described as the Mid-Atlantic’s “Premier Turkey Trot,” the 5-mile race takes some 6,000 runners through a flat, scenic course of Del Ray while collecting thousands of pounds of food donations for ALIVE!.

Alongside the race’s mascot turkey and representatives of DC Road Runners, the Del Ray Business Association and ALIVE!, Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley and the rest of City Council officially proclaimed tomorrow “Del Ray ‘Turkey Trot’ Day” at its legislative meeting last night (Tuesday).

The proclamation also honored the race’s 2025 grand marshals.

In celebration of our 50th Anniversary, we are extremely excited to announce the 2025 Turkey Trot Grand Marshals. They include lifelong Alexandrian and retired Alexandria Circuit Court Judge, James Clark, who has the distinct record of running for all 50 years, including running the one year the Turkey Trot was canceled due to a heavy snowstorm, and two long time DC Road Runners Race Directors Paul Thompson and Brian Danza, who were responsible for the growth and professionalism of the race.
