As the city suffers the latest death by COVID-19, the seven-day positivity rate is now the lowest in the region at 4.5% of residents tested for the virus, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
On Friday, the city reported that an Alexandria resident in their 50s died from the virus, bringing the death toll to 62. There are now or have been 3,378 cases of coronavirus in the city.
There have also been 298 total hospitalizations since the first case was reported on March 11, according to VDH. That’s an increase of 17 hospitalizations since this time last week.
“COVID-19 is spread by people whether or not they have symptoms, and AHD (Alexandria Health Department) estimates that nearly 10% of infected Alexandrians have required hospitalization,” notes a city release.
It is not clear how many city residents have recovered from the virus.
City Faring Better Than Neighboring Jurisdictions
There have been 31,245 (polymerase chain reaction) tests administered in the city so far. There have also been 4,201 antibody tests in Alexandria.
Alexandria trails behind its more populated regional neighbors, including:
- Arlington County, with 3,555 cases, 138 deaths and a 5% seven-day positivity rate
- Fairfax County with 18,417 cases, 558 death and a 5.7% seven-day positivity rate
- Loudoun County with 5,979 cases, 118 deaths and a 6.7% seven-day positivity rate.
Statewide, there are 2,580 COVID-related fatalities, and there are or have been 120,954 cases. There have also been 1.6 million tests administered and the state’s seven-day moving average is 7.4%.

ALX is now at a 7-day moving avg of positivity of 4.5%, the lowest in the region.

Demographic, Age and Sex Breakdown
Latino residents in the city have been hardest hit with 1,634 reported cases, followed by Black residents with 668 cases, white residents with 654 cases, Asian or Pacific Islander residents with 113 cases, 69 cases classified as “other” and three native American cases.
There are or have been 1,558 women (with 34 deaths) and 1,446 men (with 28 deaths) in Alexandria with the virus.
