The Miracle League of Alexandria will host its annual “First Responders” 9/11 Remembrance Day Ceremony and Game on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 12:45 p.m. at the Kelley Cares Miracle League Field in Alexandria.
The event will commemorate the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a ceremony honoring victims and paying tribute to first responders. Representatives from the Alexandria Police Department, Fire/EMS and Sheriff’s Department are expected to participate in the ceremony, with the Alexandria Police Honor Guard presenting colors during the national anthem.
Following the remembrance ceremony, first responders will serve as “Angels in the Outfield” buddies, assisting Miracle League players with hitting, throwing, catching and running bases during the adaptive baseball game. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, which has volunteered with the organization for more than 10 years, will provide grilled hot dogs, chips, water and cupcakes following the game.
The Miracle League of Alexandria operates the city’s only adaptive program center supporting recreational services for children with disabilities across all municipal recreation centers. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one in six children in the United States are diagnosed with a developmental disability, yet many Alexandria families remain unaware of the inclusive recreational opportunities available in their community.
The ceremony and game are free and open to the public. The Kelley Cares Miracle League Field is located at 1108 Jefferson St. in Alexandria. In case of inclement weather, the event will move to the Nannie J. Lee Center. More information is available at miracleleagueofalexandria.com.

🗓️ On this day in 1898, Historic Alexandria shares that the “City received a novel complaint, that perambulators were occupying too much space on the sidewalks of King Street, forcing pedestrians to zig-zig their way along the main commercial thoroughfare, while unperturbed mothers shopped in adjacent stores at their leisure. Though sympathetic to the complainant, legally there was little recourse to restrict the increasingly large baby carriages of the period”.
🗓️ On this day in 1965, Historic Alexandria shares that Landmark Center opened at the intersection of Duke and Van Dorn streets. “Merchant representative estimated that more than 15,000 cars came to Landmark for the grand opening. The open-air shopping center was converted to a three-story enclosed mall in the late 1989s”.
🚓 An Alexandria police officer has been charged with reckless driving following a vehicle collision that occurred during a pursuit of a stolen vehicle in June.
🚒 Hundreds of families gathered Saturday on the 100 block of South Alfred Street for the annual Friendship Firehouse Festival, celebrating 251 years of the Friendship Fire Company’s service to Alexandria.
✈️ Over three days of sometimes contentious hearings this week, the National Transportation Safety Board interrogated Federal Aviation Administration and Army officials about a list of things that went wrong and contributed to a Black Hawk helicopter and a passenger jet colliding over Washington, D.C., killing 67 people.
