ACPS redistricting process advances with release of two new proposed boundary maps

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) has unveiled two new proposed boundary maps as part of its ongoing School Boundary Redistricting Process.

The Red and Indigo plans are now open for community review and input. A Green Plan, Blue Plan, and Purple Plan were also recently presented to the public.

The new Red Map tackles utilization issues at several elementary schools, including Samuel W. Tucker, James K. Polk, and Patrick Henry. According to ACPS, the Red Map;

  • Provides an alternative solution to the utilization issues at Samuel W. Tucker, James K. Polk and Patrick Henry Elementary Schools.
  • Increases the numbers of communities that need transportation.
  • Hinders the school division’s efforts to create neighborhood schools.
  • Brings more balance to utilization to the East End.
  • Lowers the projected utilization of Naomi L Brooks Elementary School.

The new Indigo Map focuses on balancing utilization. According to ACPS, the Indigo Map;

  • Balances utilization between George Washington and Francis C Hammond Middle Schools.
  • Moves study areas to closer schools.

The school district has added new FAQs to its website based on recent feedback from the Redistricting Advisory Committee (RAC) and community members.

According to ACPS, three key meetings happened this week to move the redistricting process forward: a Redistricting Advisory Committee Meeting, a Redistricting Steering Committee Meeting, and a School Board Work Session on Redistricting Policies.

ACPS encourages families and community members who couldn’t attend live to watch recordings and presentations from these meetings.

The second Redistricting Hybrid Community Meeting is set for Tuesday, April 22, 2025, from 6–8 p.m. at Alexandria City High School – King Street Campus. A virtual option will be available.

The final School Board vote on the proposed school boundary changes is scheduled for June 12, 2025. If approved, the new boundaries will start at the beginning of the 2026–27 school year.
