Volunteer Alexandria Care for the Community During COVID-19

Volunteer Alexandria still continues to operate during this time.

As many organizations cannot operate, we are here to help match volunteers to help organizations who are providing essential services. As we are mobilizing volunteers during this difficult time, we are taking every precaution to ensure the health and safety of our volunteers following the City of Alexandria and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and restrictions.

Volunteer Alexandria has helped over 15 organizations and hundreds of individuals find and match volunteer opportunities. Please see the full list of current at-home/virtual volunteer opportunities, in-person volunteer opportunities, and in-kind donations on our Care for Community webpage.

Volunteer Alexandria’s staff is here to support your organization. Please email [email protected] to see how your nonprofit can be supported through our services during this difficult time.

Please consider making a donation toward the cause. As jobs and many things are changing daily, a donation of any amount can make a big difference during this time. To donate please click here.

Students Learn How They Help Their Community During COVID-19

Volunteer Alexandria is also offering their Breaks with Impact program online every Tuesday and Thursday 2-3 p.m. through April and May for students grade 6 through 12.

This program for young adults focuses on community engagements. Participants learn more about social issues facing Alexandrians and how nonprofits and government agencies address these issues.

Breaks with Impact connects students with leaders within those type of organizations to learn the organizations’ mission and how the students can get involved in their own community through a project.

Completing the webinar, reflection, and project tied to each online session will allow students earn direct service hours and service learning hours.

Here are what some students had to say about the Breaks with Impact program:

“It made me feel really good, like I was helping people… It really opened my eyes about the problems in Alexandria… I am making a difference in my community.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
