As the coronavirus pandemic keeps businesses closed for longer periods of time, several around Alexandria have filed closing and layoff notices to the state citing COVID-19.
The Alexandrian, a hotel at 480 King Street, was forced to lay off 115 staff, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.
Other locations in Alexandria facing layoffs include:
- Paper Source (118 King Street) — a decorative paper and supply store in Old Town. The store is temporarily closed and 44 employees have been laid off
- Alsco (725 S. Pickett Street) — a branch of the linen and uniform-rental business located in the West End; 102 employees have been laid off
- Enterprise Holdings (4700 Eisenhower Avenue) — a location in the car rental service Enterprise laid off 77 employees between the Alelxandria and the Dulles locations.
- Jim Koons Automotive Companies (5800 Edsall Road) — the Jim Koons car dealership laid off 148 employees across Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, Sterling, Vienna and Woodbridge.
Alexandrians throughout the city have been filing for unemployment in record numbers, with nearly 7,000 claims as of last week since the pandemic started.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
