Notes: Alexandria installs new lights at Hammond Middle School… into the middle of the track

Good Wednesday morning, Alexandria!

☀️ Today’s weather: The forecast predicts sunny weather with a high temperature of 86°F and a northwest wind at 7 mph during the day. In the evening, it will be partly cloudy with a low of 70°F. The northwest wind will decrease to 5 mph and become calm later in the evening.

🚨 You need to know

The new lights at Hammond Middle School will certainly stop runners in their tracks.

Alexandria Living Magazine reported that the poles for the lights were installed across the second and third lanes of the track that circles the turf soccer field. The contractor, the Robert E. Lee Electric company, placed the poles there in error, according to the Alexandria Parks and Recreation Department.

Pictures shared on the Bring Integrity Back to Alexandria Facebook page showed multiple holes drilled into the middle of the track. Commenters noted that the holes present a nuisance and a hazard to track users.

The exact location of the poles shifted around across various reports to the City Council and School Board and error was likely the result of the tricky positioning of the poles, according to Alexandria Living Magazine. Placing the pole inside the track could damage the turf field’s drainage system, but moving them outside of the track could violate the distance-from-property-line requirements.
