Alexandria preps COVID-19 vaccine availability for kids aged 5-11

Alexandria is planning on expanding vaccine availability to children ages 5-11, while waiting on the go-ahead from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration last week approved the emergency authorization of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11.

“The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) and other providers must receive additional approval and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) before administering COVID-19 vaccines to children,” ADH said in a release. “AHD is planning for the expansion of vaccine availability to this age group, including coordination with pediatricians and pharmacies.”

As of today (Monday, November 1), the number of cases climbed to 14,331, up 137 cases since this time last week. The death toll from the virus remains at 149, according to the the Virginia Department of Health.

About 90% of Alexandria’s 12-17-year-olds (6,575) have been fully vaccinated according to VDH. About 70% (91,560) of residents older than 18 have been vaccinated, as have about 81% (15,730) of seniors. Additionally, 11,814 residents have gotten a booster shot.

In the meantime, Alexandria continues to experience “Substantial” COVID-19 transmission since the week beginning October 17. Since then, a number of localities have shifted to “Substantial”, including Arlington County, Loudoun County, Fairfax County, Lancaster County, Middlesex County, Northampton County, Hampton County, Surry County, Charles City and Virginia Beach. The localities with “Moderate” transmission are now the City of Fairfax, Emporia, Greensville County and Manassas City.

The seven-day average of new COVID-19 cases for every 100,000 people is 12.2, up from 11 last week. There have been about 163 cases reported in the last two weeks (versus 174 cases last week), and the seven-day average of positive COVID-19 tests is 2.7%, down from 2.9%.

There were 77 cases reported within Alexandria City Public Schools in October. There were also 64 cases reported in ACPS in September.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
