ALX Community is expanding with the September 1 opening of a new coworking office in Old Town.
More than a third of the 15,000-square-foot office at the Atrium building at 277 S. Washington Street has been booked, and among the tenants are the city’s tourism bureau Visit Alexandria, which is leaving its office at 1 Prince Street.
“We have found that the need for collaborative, flexible mixed-use space is growing, and we’re thrilled to be able to offer that,” ALX Community co-owner Kelly Grant told ALXnow. “We want to be known as the best local coworking space in the area.”
The new location includes meeting spaces and a rooftop lounge with 360-degree views.
The company, which is the only dog-friendly coworking office in town, launched in the spring of 2019 at Founders Hall (106 N. Lee Street), which ended up getting rented out by Compass Realty. The second location at 201 N. Union Street opened not long after, and is now nearly booked, Grant says.
“What we have learned during the pandemic is that we all need to be at an office every day,” she said. “I’m honored that people think so much of our community to help it grow.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!
The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!
What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
