Downed trees and thousands of Dominion Energy customers with power outages were without power in Alexandria after a strong thunderstorm system that rocked the region overnight into Friday.
Most power outages had been restored. More than 2,300 customers were without power at 10 a.m., and that number dropped to about about 400 by 4 p.m.
On social media, Mayor Alyia Gaskins noted power outages had been at a peak over 10,000 during the storm. That number included 16 “special customers” such as schools, nursing homes and other critical areas.
“Dominion crews are working around the clock to be able to power to those locations,” Gaskins said.
Power has been restored at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center (4850 Mark Center Drive), which is open Friday with limited services.
The Alexandria Police Department said there have been downed trees and electrical lines, flooded streets and traffic signals in areas around the city.
Intersections with outages as of 7 a.m. were Seminary Road and N Howard Street, N. Howard Street and W. Braddock Road, N. Van Dorn Street and W. Braddock Road, Van Dorn Street and King Street, King Street and S. Taylor Street, King Street and S. Wakefield Street, and Seminary Road and N. Quaker Lane. APD says repairs to the traffic signal on Seminary Road are expected to continue into the afternoon.
Floodwaters were also reported in several areas as the city was under a flash flood warning during the storm. Around 12:25 a.m., units responded to a water rescue on George Washington Memorial Parkway between the marina and Slaters Lane. At least five people were rescued from the floodwaters.
Another water rescue was reported around 12:10 a.m. at E. Glebe Road and Wilson Avenue. The Alexandria Fire Department assisted two people who were stranded in a vehicle in standing water.
Downed trees have also been spotted around the city, including some that had blocked homes and Inova Alexandria Hospital.
Around 1:21 a.m., scanner reports indicated officials were prioritizing removal of a tree on N. Howard Street as it was blocking hospital access and trapping buses.
According to the scanner traffic at 7:15 a.m., a downed tree in the 700 block of N. Columbus Street was blocking several homes.
Downed electric lines and trees are also blocking the road at 100 Wesmond Drive, according to APD. The Van Dorn Street ramp to southbound Metro Road is blocked by downed trees.
APD encouraged residents to plan for extra travel time, use caution around downed trees, electrical lines, and standing water, treat traffic signal outages as four-way stops and not drive around barricades or blocked roads.
