VRE to host info session on May weekend construction at Alexandria Union Station

Construction is coming to Alexandria Union Station during multiple weekends next month, prompting some single-block road closures.

During three weekends in May, the Virginia Railway Express will be directing improvements at Alexandria Union Station and working to replace the King & Commonwealth bridges. The projects at 110 Callahan Drive will result in some “limited weekend work” and single-block road closures, VRE said in an announcement.

The road closures are planned at King Street and Commonwealth Avenue, according to VRE.

The projects are planned in coordination with the state’s “Transforming Rail in Virginia” initiative, the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s Alexandria Fourth Track Project, and several city-directed projects “to minimize community and railroad impacts,” according to VRE.

Planned work “will reconstruct station platforms, replace the aging railroad bridges over King Street and Commonwealth Avenue, and install new elevators to improve safety, accessibility, and the overall passenger experience,” a project description reads.

Residents can learn more and hear directly from the project team during a virtual community session at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, April 21.

Registration is available on VRE’s website.
