A sheriff’s deputy was fired after attempting to smuggle drugs into the jail Saturday, according to the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said former Deputy Sheriff Amarachukwu W. Igwe tried to provide drugs to an inmate at the jail. After an investigation, the sheriff’s office took Igwe into custody before she could deliver the drugs.
Igwe was taken to the Arlington County jail and appeared for a magistrate, who issued warrants charging Igwe with delivery of drugs, firearms, explosives, etc., to prisoners or committed persons; conspiracy to deliver drugs to prisoners or committed persons; and Schedule III drug possession.
Sheriff Sean Casey immediately fired Igwe, who had been employed with the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office since July 14, 2025.
“I commend the diligent work of our Investigations, Professionalism & Oversight Section whose proactive efforts uncovered this criminal conduct before it could jeopardize the safety of our staff or the residents of the Detention Center,” Casey said in a statement. “I have zero tolerance for actions that undermine the security of our facility and those who violate the public trust placed in them will face the full consequences of their actions.”
The investigation remains active.
