Fired Alexandria sheriff’s deputy allegedly agreed to smuggle drugs to inmate for $500

More details have been released about a fired Alexandria sheriff’s deputy going to court next month after allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs to an inmate in the city jail.

During the first week in April, an inmate at the detention center informed the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office that at least one sworn officer had given an inmate food items and narcotics. A widespread investigation found then-Deputy Sheriff Amarachukwu W. Igwe had an “overly familiar relationship with a male inmate,” according to a recently released search warrant affidavit.

The family of a man who died in Alexandria Police Department custody last summer is asking for accountability, as the city’s Independent Community Policing Review Board has taken up the case.

The family of Allan Tucker II wants the two arresting officers and their supervisor charged with criminal negligence in his Aug. 15, 2025 death. The 32-year-old Tucker was arrested for public intoxication in the hallway of his apartment complex home and later died in police custody while waiting 35 to 45 minutes in the back of an APD cruiser parked in the sally port of the Alexandria jail.

Auditor finds Alexandria police disregarded man’s hospital requests before in-custody death

Alexandria’s independent policing auditor has concluded Alexandria Police Department officers violated performance standards and body camera directives when they transported Allan Tucker II, who died in their custody in the sally port of the city jail.

That’s according to a report Independent Police Auditor Ameratu Kamara released Monday (June 22). Kamara found that the officer who arrested Tucker at an apartment complex in the city’s West End on Aug. 15, 2025, disregarded the 32-year-old Tucker’s multiple requests to be taken to the hospital, even as they drove past Inova Alexandria Hospital.

Hearing on man’s death in Alexandria police custody set for late June

Alexandria’s Independent Community Policing Review Board will conduct a public hearing on Monday, June 29, after the release of a report on the death of 32-year-old Allan Tucker in Alexandria Police Department custody last summer.

The public hearing will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. in City Council Chamber at the Del Pepper Community Center, following the release of the auditor’s report Monday, June 22 on the auditor and board’s website. The public hearing will allow for residents to speak before the review board for three minutes apiece.

Alexandria Sheriff Sean Casey and members of his staff argued against a proposed budget reallocation before City Council on Saturday (April 18).

Casey said a proposal by Vice Mayor Sarah Bagley and City Councilman Abdel Elnoubi to transfer $200,000 out of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office budget for a jail operational efficiency study is a waste of valuable resources and will hurt an already cash-strapped agency. While a number of speakers at Saturday’s public hearing called for Casey’s budget to be cut over what they see as voluntary collaboration with U.S. Immigration and Enforcement, several City Council members defended the proposed study, saying the measure is intended to improve ASO operations.

A sheriff’s deputy was fired after attempting to smuggle drugs into the jail Saturday, according to the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said former Deputy Sheriff Amarachukwu W. Igwe tried to provide drugs to an inmate at the jail. After an investigation, the sheriff’s office took Igwe into custody before she could deliver the drugs.

On Tuesday, the 20-year-old mother of two joined her fellow inmates for the annual resource fair in the jail gymnasium. Jones is set to be released at the end of July for a felony shoplifting charge, and says she never wants to come back.
