On This Day in Alexandria History — “On February 4, 1861, Unionist George Brent was elected to represent Alexandria at the upcoming secessionist convention to be convened in Richmond shortly thereafter. Brent, who supported slavery, correctly predicted that if Southern states seceded from the United States, they would most likely lose a potential war with the North, possibly resulting in the elimination of slavery in all states.” [Historic Alexandria]

Parks, Dominion Reach Agreement — “After months of negotiations and pressure from both elected officials and community members, Dominion Energy and NOVA Parks have settled on a new path forward for managing trees near power lines along the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Railroad Regional Park.” [FFXnow]

City Updates Affordable Unit List — “The Office of Housing is pleased to provide information about affordable rental opportunities in the City of Alexandria. Metro Honors Rosa Parks — “To commemorate the day, Metro is placing signs on trains and buses, reserving a single seat in recognition of Parks’ refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus and subsequent arrest in 1955. Her act of courage helped advance the civil rights movement.” [WMATA]

Bipartisan Probation Reform Advancing — “The group, as well as a coalition of criminal justice reform organizations, probation officers, prosecutors, defense attorneys and victims’ advocates, helped develop the new proposal, which would allow formerly incarcerated people to be released from probation after a year if they demonstrate their rehabilitation by meeting certain benchmarks laid out by their probation officer.” [Virginia Mercury]

Warehouse Sale Returning —”The annual event is planned for February 7 and 8. The sale will once again take place along King Street and side streets in Old Town Alexandria. Merchandise will be displayed in stores as well as pop-up tents and open retail areas.” [Northern Virginia Magazine]
