ICYMI: Ebbin Resigns, Causing ‘Political Domino Effect’ — “State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-39) announced that he will be resigning to join Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger’s administration … Soon after Ebbin’s announcement, Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-5) and former Del. Mark Levine (D-45) announced their intention to run for Ebbin’s seat. Additionally, Alexandria City Councilman R. Kirk McPike now says that he’s considering running for Bennett-Parker’s current seat.” [ALXnow]

Beyer Calls For ICE Accountability After Fatal Shooting — “The Trump Administration sent ICE to communities like Minneapolis to sow fear and division. A masked ICE agent just killed an unarmed woman without justification, and the Administration is lying about it. This doesn’t make us safer. We need an investigation and accountability.” [Rep. Essay Contest Open to ALX Students — “Students in 7th and 8th grade at any Alexandria public or private school are invited to enter the 2026 George Washington Essay Contest, held in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary … Two winners will be selected — one middle school student and one high school student — and each will receive a $500 cash prize.” [The Zebra]

Lawmakers Seek Control Over Nat’l Guard Deployment —”Virginia lawmakers are proposing a plan that would allow them to review any federal deployment of the state’s National Guard members. The measure, called the National Guard Integrity and Democracy Protection Act, comes in response to President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard members to cities across the country to address crime.” [WTOP]

Award Pending for Local Civil Rights Icon — “Rep. Don Beyer’s efforts to secure a Congressional Gold Medal for a local civil-rights icon remain in limbo. A piece of legislation, introduced last May, would make Joan Trumpauer Mulholland the newest recipient of Congress’s highest honor. But it is unlikely to win passage while Republicans control Congress, a staff member said.” [ARLnow]

Local Authors Cookbook of ‘Gravestone Recipes’ — “Rosie Grant never expected she’d be publishing a book full of recipes from gravestones when she walked through Ivy Hill Cemetery on her way home from Bishop Ireton High School. But, here she is. The Alexandria native recently published her first book, ‘To Die For,’ which catalogues more than 40 recipes found on tombstones in cemeteries across the United States.” [The Alexandria Times]

Weapon Charges for Convicted Felon — “Fairfax County police credited Operation Press Check, the department’s initiative aimed at reducing illegal firearm possessions by convicted felons, for leading to the arrest of a 22-year-old Alexandria man on New Year’s Day, authorities say.” [Patch]

Registration Open For Washington Parade — “It’s time to register as a marching unit in Alexandria’s George Washington Birthday Parade on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.!  Here’s a message from organizers about taking part in the big day: The theme for the 2026 Parade is “George Washington: Virginia’s Son ~ America’s Founding Father” in honor of George Washington’s leading role in the founding of our country during its 250th Anniversary Year.” [Alexandria Living Magazine]
