ACPS to consider prohibiting second jobs for administrators after employee’s dismissal

After a now-fired Alexandria City Public Schools administrator was found with a second job, the Alexandria City School Board is considering updates to its second job policy.

On Thursday, the School Board will review a policy update for employees’ additional jobs beyond their school district employment. The proposed addition calls for no second jobs for ACPS chiefs, executive directors or directors unless the superintendent gives approval. It would apply for second jobs with an average of 10 hours per week for at least a month.

The proposal comes after an October report in The Alexandria Times revealed Ayanna Harrison, one of ACPS’ facilities and operations administrators, held a second job at an Atlanta public charter school. The charter school job was also a full-time administrator position.

Both ACPS and the charter school fired Harrison. Harrison’s salary at ACPS was $158,798, according to The Washington Post. Before the firing, Harrison had been named to take on duties of the departing Chief Operating Officer Alicia Hart.

Non-administrator employees can still have second jobs. According to the current policy, second jobs are permitted as long as they don’t interfere with ACPS employment and work hours or present a conflict of interest. Employees on paid or unpaid leave from ACPS can only get another job with the superintendent’s permission.

Thursday’s meeting is the first of the year for the board. It will also consider other policy updates like allocating funds to private schools receiving ACPS Title I services, setting regulations for placing home-schooled students into public school grades and clarifying the process for seeking school volunteers.
