Alexandria recognized as one of nation’s best ‘National Night Out’ participants

The organization behind National Night Out has recognized Alexandria as one of the best cities of its population size to participate in the annual night of law enforcement engagement.

Alexandria was ranked No. 15 for its “exemplary community involvement” among cities with a population of 100,000-300,000, according to an Alexandria Police Department release. Awards were decided by the National Association of Town Watch, the nonprofit sponsor behind National Night Out.

The yearly night of engagement invites residents, city officials and local organizations to celebrate public safety. Earlier this year, APD “participated in a record number of registered cookouts, block parties, neighborhood coffees, and potlucks,” according to the press release.

“Out of more than 400 communities that participated this year, Alexandria’s engagement, creativity, and commitment to fostering trust between officers and residents earned this prestigious recognition,” APD said.

The department “remains committed to innovative policing strategies that prioritize relationships, transparency, and collaboration.”

“National Night Out is about more than just a single evening; it’s a reflection of the ongoing partnership between our officers and the community we serve,” Chief Tarrick McGuire said in the release. “We’re proud to be recognized for our efforts to create safe, welcoming neighborhoods and to connect with residents in meaningful ways.”

Alexandria was awarded in its population category alongside nearby Stafford County (No. 13) and Charles County, Md. (No. 19).
