World AIDS Day event with testimonies and music happening in Alexandria next week

The city of Alexandria plans to honor World AIDS Day with an evening of choir performances, testimonies and education next week.

The city’s annual World AIDS Day Commemoration invites residents to remember those lost to HIV/AIDS, celebrate progress made for people at risk or living with HIV/AIDS and stand in solidarity against stigmas surrounding the virus. The event is scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. next Monday, Dec. 1, at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center on 1108 Jefferson Street.

This year’s event will feature a panel of people living with HIV and health experts, who will “discuss their experiences and vision for the future,” Alexandria Health Department spokesperson Eve Elliott told ALXnow.

Local musician Tony Craddock and the Northern Virginia World AIDS Day Choir will give performances, and Mayor Alyia Gaskins will read a commemorative proclamation.

The evening will feature light refreshments, raffles and gift cards for the first 30 guests to arrive. Attendees are welcome to wear “holiday attire” and the event’s signature red ribbon, in memory of those lost to HIV-related illnesses.

The event is planned by the Alexandria Health Department in partnership with Fairfax County and local chapters of the National Council of Negro Women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and the Northern Virginia Business and Professional Women’s Club.

As of 2024, more than 28,000 Virginians live with HIV, and the virus disproportionately affects Black and Hispanic residents. AHD added:

Alexandria Health Department hopes that the event will bring people together to remember our history and those lost due to HIV/AIDS and to recognize the incredible progress that has been made to prevent HIV infections and to help people with HIV/AIDS live long, healthy lives. Only by continuing to recognize the significance of HIV/AIDS and those impacted can we combat stigma, ensure public awareness, and protect and promote health in our communities.

Residents can learn more about affordable and confidential options for HIV testing on the city’s website.
