Morning Notes for November 17, 2025

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Nov. 17, 1927, a devastating tornado ripped through Alexandria, injuring dozens of people and causing half million dollars in damage. The front façade of Jackson Hotel on King Street was torn away and some displaced families were temporarily sheltered at the almshouse in Del Ray … The path of the tornado spread over 17 miles long with a width ranging from 20 to over 300 yards. Witnesses described the sound of the wind as ‘a huge waterfall.’ Fortunately there were no fatalities, but 32 people were injured in the unusual weather event.” [Historic Alexandria]

APD Honors Crash Victims — “Chief McGuire joined Alexandria Families for Safe Streets this morning (Sunday) for an important ceremony marking the day and affirming our commitment to Vision Zero. We stand with survivors and all who continue to carry the impact of these incidents. Together, let us commit to safer roads, responsible driving, and protecting one another.” [Alexandria Police Department]

Local Girl Scout Supports Shelter Pets — “Last year I planned my Girl Scout’s Silver Award project around wanting to help build awareness about the plight of animals and the need for adoption. There are many animals in our community who do not have a home, which means they do not have food or someone to love them … So I decided to host a towel drive at my school Alexandria Country Day School.” [The Zebra]

Housing 2040 Meets Tonight — “As part of the Housing 2040 Master Plan process, please join us to learn about ways to preserve and enhance affordable housing in Alexandria and to help tenants remain in their communities safely and affordably.” [City of Alexandria]

Also, a ‘Radical’ Lyceum Lecture  — “As we reflect on the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War, we tend to think of the Revolution as originating from philosophical arguments about rights and sovereignty made in political pamphlets by enlightened American statesmen. But the American Revolution originated through a variety of cultural forms, including visual and material culture, produced in England as well as America.” [City of Alexandria]

It’s Monday — Expect sunny skies and a high temperature near 50 degrees during the day, accompanied by a northwest wind blowing at 11 to 17 mph, and gusts reaching up to 30 mph. The night will be mostly clear with temperatures dropping to around 33 degrees, while the northwest wind slows to 3 to 7 mph. [NWS]
