Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger appeared in a “Latinos for Spanberger” rally today (Thursday) in Alexandria.
Spanberger spoke at a packed event at Los Tios (2615 Mount Vernon Avenue) in Del Ray, flanked by Latino legislators Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Del. Alfonso Lopez D-Virginia House District 3), and City Council Member Canek Aguirre. Spanberger has a 10-digit lead against her opponent, Lieutenant Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, according to a recent Roanoke College poll.
“Everyone across Virginia knows the power that this election can have,” Spanberger told the crowd. “The country is watching us, and we will win.”
The event in Alexandria was part of Spanberger’s statewide bus tour ahead of Election Day next Tuesday, Nov. 4. She was also scheduled to make appearances today in Fairfax and Prince William counties.
During the rally, Spanberger characterized herself as a “law and order Democrat,” but said that, if elected, she would stand up to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement.
“We need a governor who will recognize that this chaos is hurting the people that the governor is supposed to serve,” Spanberger said. “But it is not ‘law and order’ to have your citizens or community members live in fear.”
Gallego praised Spanberger, who served with him in Congress before was sworn into the Senate earlier this year. Spanberger represented Virginia’s 7th Congressional District from 2019 to early 2025.
“When things got hard and decisions had to be made, you wanted Abigail to be there,” Gallego said.
Aguirre cried foul over federal immigration enforcement, and said that criminals should be arrested, but that the recent arrests of workers in Arlandria was an overreach.
“If we’re going to arrest and deport criminals, do that, but don’t terrorize communities,” Aguirre said. “Congresswoman Spanberger comes from a law enforcement background, and she understands what enforcing the law is versus profiling and terrorizing communities.”
In-person early voting ends at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections (132 N. Royal Street) and the Charles E. Beatley Jr. Central Library (5005 Duke Street).
Whichever gubernatorial candidate wins will be the first female governor of Virginia.
