Seven transportation agencies to discuss regional projects at Monday meeting

Representatives from seven transportation agencies will gather Monday evening for their annual joint meeting to discuss transportation projects and programs across Northern Virginia, including several initiatives affecting Alexandria.

The Northern Virginia Joint Transportation Meeting, required by state code, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the VDOT Northern Virginia District Building in Fairfax. The event brings together the Commonwealth Transportation Board, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, Virginia Railway Express, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board, and state rail agencies.

Alexandria projects on the agenda

Several projects with direct impact on Alexandria will be discussed during the meeting:

The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority will provide updates on the Alexandria Fourth Track project, part of the state’s broader rail expansion initiative. The authority will also discuss the Long Bridge project, Franconia to Lorton Third Track, and Franconia-Springfield Bypass projects.

Virginia Railway Express will present its System Plan 2050 overview and capital projects update, which affects service for Alexandria commuters using the system.

The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission will discuss its Envision Route 7 program, which includes bus rapid transit planning that extends through Alexandria along Route 7. NVTC will also present on its Commuter Choice program.

What else will be covered

Other regional initiatives on the agenda include:

VDOT’s I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension project, known as 495 NEXT, along with the agency’s Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions studies and driver safety campaigns.

NVTA’s multimodal transportation investments, Bus Rapid Transit Action Plan and its fiscal 2026-2031 Six Year Program.

The Department of Rail and Public Transportation’s funding opportunities and Six-Year Improvement Program.

The Transportation Planning Board’s ongoing update to Visualize 2050, the region’s long-range transportation plan.

The Commonwealth’s Project Pipeline studies will also be presented.

How to participate

The meeting format includes an open house beginning at 6:30 p.m., where attendees can speak directly with agency representatives. A listening session with appointed officials from the various agencies starts at 7:15 p.m. and will be livestreamed on YouTube in listen-only mode.
