Duke Street Transitway project nears full funding with $15M more from NVTA

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, on Thursday (July 9) unanimously approved a $15 million allocation toward the Duke Street Transitway Project.

With the allocation, NVTA has funded $102 million for the $102.5 million project, which will add more than four miles of bus rapid transit lanes along Duke Street between the King Street-Old Town Metro station and the city’s border with Fairfax County near the former Landmark Mall site. The project has been in the works for years and is in the design phase. The estimated completion date for the new lanes is Dec. 31, 2029.

Seven transportation agencies to discuss regional projects at Monday meeting

Representatives from seven transportation agencies will gather Monday evening for their annual joint meeting to discuss transportation projects and programs across Northern Virginia, including several initiatives affecting Alexandria.

The Northern Virginia Joint Transportation Meeting, required by state code, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the VDOT Northern Virginia District Building in Fairfax. The event brings together the Commonwealth Transportation Board, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, Virginia Railway Express, the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board, and state rail agencies.

Gaskins’ vote against I-495 express lanes blocks NVTA regional endorsement

Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins cast the lone dissenting vote that blocked the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority from endorsing a proposed extension of express lanes along the southern stretch of I-495, she told the City Council on Tuesday night.

The NVTA considered approving a letter of support for the Virginia Department of Transportation’s I-495 Southside Express Lanes Project at its Sept. 11 meeting. Still, the measure failed due to the authority’s voting requirements.
