Fired State Department official from Alexandria enters 8th Congressional District race

Michael Duffin, a former State Department official who was terminated in July, announced on Wednesday his campaign for the Democratic nomination in Virginia’s 8th Congressional District, joining a growing primary field that includes a former Alexandria city councilman.

Duffin announced his candidacy early Wednesday morning on LinkedIn before making a formal campaign announcement later in the day, according to Patch.

“Excited to announce that I am running for Virginia’s 8th Congressional District,” Duffin wrote. “As a fired Fed, I want to fight for the rights of federal employees and ease the economic pain of middle-class families.”

Duffin was among approximately 1,300 foreign policy employees terminated by the Trump administration on July 11, according to his campaign website. His entry brings the number of Democratic candidates seeking the party’s nomination to three. Rep. Don Beyer, the incumbent, is pursuing a seventh term.

“Like many federal workers and contractors in Northern Virginia and across the country, my family is experiencing economic anxiety from these unprecedented and illegal cuts to the federal workforce,” Duffin said. “As the father of two young boys, I am deeply concerned about the world they will grow up in.”

Duffin described Beyer as “an honorable man,” but said “our party and district need someone who truly understands the economic pain the people of Northern Virginia are feeling and will work in lockstep with unions to fight for the rights of federal workers.”

Beyer, 75, has represented the district since 2015, winning his last race in 2024 with 71.5% of the vote. He serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and as senior House Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee, reporting $681,353 in cash on hand as of June 30.

Duffin’s platform includes protecting federal workers, restoring U.S. aid programs, expanding student loan forgiveness and providing economic relief for middle-class families. His proposals include a tax-free savings program for first-time homebuyers, increased tax credits for daycare and dependent care, and allowing pre-tax contributions for children’s college savings plans.

Duffin spent 12 years at the State Department, including nearly a decade in the Bureau of Counterterrorism. He worked on programs addressing white supremacist organizations starting in 2016 and helped expand the Strong Cities Network. His work took him to 25 countries, and he received multiple awards, including a Superior Honor Award and a Benjamin Franklin Award.

Originally from Chicago’s South Side, Duffin worked as a teacher and journalist before entering government service. He holds degrees from DePaul University, Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, USC’s Annenberg School, and Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. Duffin, 47, lives in Alexandria’s West End with his wife and their two sons, ages 1 and 7.

Duffin joins former Alexandria City Councilman Mohamed “Mo” Seifeldein and Frank Ferreira in seeking the Democratic nomination. Seifeldein, 41, who announced his campaign in August, resigned from the U.S. Department of Labor, citing opposition to Trump administration policies. He served on the Alexandria City Council from 2019 to 2021.

On the Republican side, Heerak Christian Kim and Anthony Arthur Sabio, 50, have announced campaigns.

The 8th District, which includes Arlington County, Alexandria, Falls Church, and part of Fairfax County, is rated as solidly Democratic. Primary and candidate filing dates for the 2026 election cycle have not been set. The general election is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026.
