The Departmental Progressive Club (411 Gibbon Street) will celebrate its 98th anniversary on Oct. 3 and present its annual community service awards.
The free event at the historic private club starts at 6 p.m. and includes the presentation of awards to Tammy Mann, former CEO of the Campagna Center, and to Carpenter’s Shelter. Guests are asked to RSVP online.
The Departmental Progressive Club was founded in 1927 by seven prominent Black Alexandrians, Jesse Carter, Lawrence Day, Clarence Greene, Raymond Green, Booker T. Harper, Jesse Pollard, and Samuel Reynolds, as a social and community service organization, and moved to its Gibbon Street headquarters in 1955.
“Come and mingle with old and new friends, indulge in delicious refreshments, and commemorate this special occasion,” DPC said in its event announcement. “Come raise a glass to many more years of fellowship. We look forward to seeing you there!”
Mann stepped down as president and CEO of the Campagna Center earlier this year, after leading the educational and social development nonprofit since 2011. She was named the business leader of the year in 2020 by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and helped lead the organization to assist thousands of children and adults with literacy programs and daycare for under-resourced families.
Carpenter’s Shelter is one of the largest homeless shelters in the region, and provides life services, mental health services, employment assistance, and rapid rehousing programs.
