Charles Barrett Elementary School unveiled a new reading corner Thursday, funded by a $75,000 Amazon donation and community partnerships aimed at boosting student literacy.

The project, six months in the making, transformed a corner of the school library with custom murals by artist Shawn James, comfortable seating and hundreds of new books. Amazon also donated 500 backpacks filled with books and supplies, while Reading Is Fundamental contributed more than 1,000 books to the school library.

“This investment in our school community gives students the opportunity to get excited about reading, to explore new books, new ideas, and take that with them through their whole educational career,” said Principal Loren Brody.

The mural was painted and the space developed over the summer, Brody said.

“This reading nook provides students with the opportunity to connect to learning in a different way,” said Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt. “Having a private space with a beautiful mural — we’re just grateful for our partners that can help us really build our literacy library.”

Brody said the new space fills students with excitement about reading and literacy.

“It’s like the key that unlocks opportunities for them for the future,” she said.
